What can Artificial Insemination Do for your Flock???

Polypay breeders often ask what can A.I. do for my flock.  A lot depends on your goals.  Are you looking to raise a future sire out of your best ewe?  Do you want a quick start in NSIP? Are you in NSIP and want to challenge your best ram with a reference sire?  Do you just want to take advantage of A.I. to bring new blood lines into a closed flock?  There are lots of questions and we will give you our thoughts on them!

Raising a flock sire out of your best ewe family.

You know a ewe family that you would like to perpetuate.  The ewe that always has the best lamb.  If you could only get a lamb out of a ram that would accentuate her positives and pull up her negatives.  A.I. could be a way to keep her lineage in the flock for a long time to come.  One of the better sires in the breed was planned and born through A.I.   Gary and Laurel Vondrachek used Willie A.I. in 1998.  Out of those matings they got the great 930 ram; one of their best ewes and one of the top sires of the breed.  930 now ranks in the very top of the Polypay breed.  What would your top ewes have bred to a sire like 930?

You are looking at NSIP and want to progress rapidly?

I visited with a really nice Polypay breeder at the National Sale.  He noticed how well the NSIP rams sold.  His concern was how can he start now?  How could he ever catch up to the breeders that started early?   A.I. and reference sires can put you on a level playing field with breeders who have been using NSIP for years.  Reference sires can help add immediate "Accuracy" to all your sheep.

For years the beef industry used what they called reference sires.  Bulls of know genetic potential were used A.I. in a herd.  This gave the breeder a chance to compare his sires to know genetics.  Some people found out their bulls weren't as good as they thought.  Others found out their bulls were far superior to the reference sire.  Is your current ram the next Willie or Flockmaker?   Discover how good your rams are.

You have a closed flock for biosecurity reason, A.I. can help new bloodlines.

You closed your flock because of scrapies or OPP.  A.I could be an avenue to bring in new bloodlines without bringing in outside rams.  Like we said before raise your own future sires.

What about cost?

Cost to bred a ewe A.I. will run from $100-$150 depending on how much of the set up work you do.  There are several reputable veterinarians and technicians out there that can work with you.  Contact one of the breeders with semen for sale and discuss the technicians in your area.  It is not easy, but it is doable.  It will move your flock into the future!
